Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are organic molecules which are carbon containing compounds found in living things. Carbohydrates are known as macromolecules or biological molecules.
Function:
Carbohydrates are used for short term energy.Found in:
• Starches (used for energy storage in plants)
• Sugars (-ose means sugar)
- Glucose
- Cellulose
- Glycogen (used for energy storage in animals)
Other Important Information:
Monomers are small molecules that are subunits of polymers. Polymers are large molecules made of many monomers that are held together by chemical bonds.
• Subunit/Monomer - monosaccharides (simple sugars)
• Polymers - polysaccharides (complex sugars)
• Chemical components - carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

Summary:
The review for carbohydrates was very well needed. I obviously knew the information about it, I just needed the refresher for it since it was one of the very first things we talked about this semester. Something that I found interesting while learning and researching about this topic was that there are different sugars that are used for storage. I never realized that one type of sugar would go to an animal and another would go to a plant, I just figured they'd be the same. Carbohydrates can be used outside of biology by runners. Runners will eat a lot of carbs to get energy for their races.
The key details were highlighted very well, and in a short and sweet way. This is a great blog for a quick review. I like how you mentioned, in your summary that runners use carbs for energy, have you ever had one of these pasta nights. Also it would have been nice for you to add that carbohydrates are our main source of energy.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog because it is simple and gets right to the point. You have the basics included and this would be a great review tool to go back and look at before the test. I do not think you could've done anything different to better it, it is a good post
ReplyDeleteThe way you broke down the information makes it easy for the reader to understand for something quick and as a refresher. When we started reviewing I completely blanked and that being because it was the first thing we learned and because it was so long ago. There wasn't really anything I thought you could add.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you organized your blog, how you cut to the point instead of dragging on and on. I think the only thing that would have made it better was some more colors or pictures. I like how you used a real world connection in your reflection rather just stuff in a biology classroom.
