What is Mitosis?

Mitosis is the process when a mother cell produces two identical daughter cells through asexual reproduction. Mitosis is a part of the cell cycle. Mitosis helps grow reproduces somatic cells (body cells).

Steps of Mitosis

Prophase:
       -Nucleus begins to disappear
-Centrioles begin to move towards opposite sides of the cell

Metaphase "Middle"
-Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
-Centrioles create spindle fibers and attach them to the chromosomes

Anaphase "Away"
       -Spindle fibers pull apart chromosomes
-Each centriole gets half of each chromosome, making both sides having identical chromatids

Telophase "Two"
-Chromatids at each side replicate to become full chromosomes
-Nucleus begins to reform around chromosomes
*Cells do not split in this step*

Cytokinesis
-Animal cells pinch towards middle and split into two
-Plant cells form a cell plate in between
*Cytokinesis is not technically part of Mitosis*

*A way to remember the steps of Mitosis is the acronym PMAT*

Reflection

Mitosis is a part of the cell cycle and there are many different steps to Mitosis. I learned that Mitosis is very important to the reproduction of body cells and without it, our body cells would not be able to reproduce effectively. The steps of Mitosis also work hard together to make sure there are no problems in the process.

  1. I love your animations, and the explanations for each stage. In your reflection I would have liked to have seen mitosis being compared to something. I also think a video or quizlet link would have been nice a a quick study method before the test.

  3. I like how you included descriptions of each stage of mitosis. I would add a part where you are comparing mitosis and meiosis. I didn't know if we didn't reproduce the body cells that it would be harder to reproduce.
