Cell Wall

-------__---__---Cell Wall---__---__-------

   -Payton Tucker

Where is it found?

*The Cell Wall is only found in plant and bacteria cells, NEVER in animals cells.
*It surrounds the outside of the cell membrane.

What is it made of?

*The Cell Wall is composed of cellulose (which is a type of carbohydrate)
* These Cellulose fibers are long, linear polymers of hundreds of glucose molecules.

How does it help the cell?

*Semi-Permeable, allowing good substances in and keeping the bad out.
*Regulates the Metabolic Process of the cell.
*Protects and supports the cell .
*Keeps plant cells rigid.
*Keeps plant cells from bursting in hypotonic movements.
*Allows Plants to stand.
*Gives the cell a structured shape.

Summary:

The Cell Wall is one of the only two organelles that are found in plant cells but not animal cells. Composed of cellulose, the fibers of cell wall are laid down in different directions to add strength, and allow the organelle to preform it's functions. Which include providing rigidity, tensile strength, structural support, protection against mechanical stress and infection. It is also important to know that the cell wall is the reason plant cells can't burst during osmosis, while animals cells (with a cell membrane alone) does.

Reflection:

Before this post, I had forgotten that the cell is composed of cellulose. But, I did know all the other information including the functions and where the cell wall is found. It was nice to get a quick refresher on an important organelle, only found in the plant and bacteria cells. I enjoy the topic, mostly because I did my project on the cell wall for my campaign project.

  1. Very good blog! This makes it very easy to study the Cell Wall. I appreciate that you put in video links. The one thing I wish you had done was improve your layout, which makes it a bit difficult to read, in my opinion. Overall, a great blog.

  2. The content is great and helped me distinguish things I was confused on. Knowing that you did your campaign project helps reassures that you know the information really well. I would say to read over your blog maybe next time to make sure the information isn't repetitive so the reader isn't seeing the same thing over and over again.

  3. I really like the way your blog is organized! I also forgot that the cell wall was made of cellulose. I thought it was really cool that the cell walls fibers are laid in different directions to create more stability. One think I found out that I thought was neat was that the cell wall and the vacuole work together to maintain a good turgor pressure in the cell. I really liked reading your blog I think it'll be really helpful when I'm studying.

  6. Your blog is very neat and well put together. Your information makes it very easy to review. It is also very thorough. I can't find anything to elaborate on but the cell wall is for support and protection.
