Abiogenesis: All From Nothing
Definition: Abiogenesis is the theory life came from non-living material
Behind the Theory
The universe -- stars, galaxies, and atoms -- were all formed by particles produced by the Big Bang (spontaneous generation). Elements like oxygen, nitrogen and carbon were formed. The elements, which were spread across the universe by the supernovas caused by the Big Bang, created the planets and more stars.
This theory would imply that organisms were formed very slowly, over millions and millions of years, from very small organisms.
In the 'prebiotic soup' experiment, conditions mimicking primitive Earth were put together. Amino acids were formed by the mixing of methane, hydrogen, ammonia and oxygen in spark discharge apparatus. This proved that in conditions like that of early Earth, it was possible to create organic molecules in large amounts.
In order for us to exist, a great amount of time would have to pass. This process would not be "overnight", it would be very slow.
What I Learned
I had no clue that a prebiotic soup experiment existed, and that it was actually able to show the organic molecules being created. I knew the idea of abiogenesis existed but I hadn't looked very far into it. I liked this because I was uninformed and wanted to look into it. This can be applied outside of biology as we analyze our ideas of the world around us and decide what we think of it.

Nice job on this post first of all! Second I had no clue about the prebiotic soup experiment either! The only thin I think you could critique is the layout because it makes me feel like a report and not a fun post, but other then that very nice.
ReplyDeleteThe way this blog is organized is very neat and not cluttered. The information is straight to the point and gives the reader all they need to know. You also did a great job researching a topic most people probably have no clue about. Overall, you did a wonderful job.
