Characteristics of Life

                                    Characteristics of Life!

There are seven different characteristics of life. We use the characteristics of life to determine whether something is living or non-living. For something to be living it must possess all of these characteristics. If something is missing just one, it is considered non-living.

Characteristic 1:
"All living things are composed of cells."
Single-cell organisms have everything they need to be self-sufficient.In multicellular
- In multicellular Organisms, specialization tells some cells to do only certain things.

Characteristic 2:
"Living things must have different levels of organization"

-The most common organization is this one:

CELL --> TISSUE --> ORGANS --> ORGAN SYSTEM --> ORGANISM
*Cells come together to make tissue, tissue comes together to make organs, organs come together to make an organ system,

Characteristic 3:
"All living things use energy."

Examples: Sunlight, ATP, anaerobic / aerobic respiration

Characteristic 4:
"Living things respond to their environment"
Also known as homeostasis
-Living things will make changes in response to a stimulus in their environment.
-Homeostasis is the act of an organism maintaining its same or current condition.

Characteristic 5:
"All living things grow."
*Goes through cell division
Mitosis and Meiosis
An organism gets larger as the number of cells increase

Characteristic 6:
"All living things reproduce."
-Asexual reproduction : Producing offspring without the use of gametes.
-Sexual reproduction : Producing offspring by the joining of sex cells.

Characteristic 7:
"All living things adapt to their environment"

Adaptations are traits giving an organism an advantage in a certain environment.

Heres a quick video that shows great imagery and will start to get you thinking about the amazing occurrence of life!

What are some living and non-living things in nature?

Reflection

I really like this topic, I feel like it is important to know that many amazing things that occur in life. It can help us understand more about the world we live in. I learned many new things through researching this topic. Like how many different things are considered living that I didn't think were. I also learned more about how homeostasis works and that it is incredibly important to life. This knowledge will definitely help me in the future.

  2. I like how you gave the short definition to the characteristic then went into depth with and and categorized by color. I agree that it is important to be informed on the amazing occurrences in life. I also learned that a lot more things are considered living than I thought. I love the way the blog intrigued me with the colors and expression in telling the audience about the characteristics of life.

  3. The color coding helped me a lot. My only problem is that sometimes, the color blend made it hard to read. Overall though, I'm not sure what I could add because you seemed to have covered everything.

  4. Wow! This had all the information I could ever need to study the characteristics of life. In your reflection you said "many different things are considered living that I didn't think were". What is one thing that you thought wasn't considered living but actually is? Honestly everything is perfect, besides the distracting colors...and I think you may have forgotten to add your citation for the image and video.

  5. I liked how your notes are very well structured and organized, I loved the color coding. What are some of the things that are living that we didn't know? I know we have covered a few things that surprised me this year like yoghurt and sponges. The only thing you have to change is the citations because they were not present.

  6. I really liked how your notes were color coded and all organized. Everything looks really good and helped me remember the characteristics of life since we learned them early in the year. However, there were no citations.

  7. I like how you put a ton of information in this, it's very convenient because it's organized into colors. I think that it's really awesome that in your reflection you show a want to understand and learn about the world. I don't think I can really add to what you posted, but I find it's interesting that yogurt is considered living and we eat it anyway.
