Genetic Variation: Crossing Over

Genetic Mutation: Crossing Over
Crossing over is a where homologous chromosomes exchange genes which results in a mixture of parental characteristics in offspring; recombination
  • Mutations are any change in the DNA sequence
  • Crossing over is considered a type of mutation but it can be either a good mutation or a bad mutation
  • Crossing over results in genetic variations between offspring and parent
  • Crossing over can ONLY be a form of sexual reproduction
    • It can not be asexual because with asexual reproduction the offspring have to be identical
  • We would need crossing over because it can help living things have a higher diversity within their population, allowing for better chances of adaptation to their changing environments and survival of the species
A good example to help better understand crossing over would be to think about two traders
  • the two traders meet up to exchange their goods with each other which results in both of them leaving with more diverse items then they originally had
REFLECTION: This topic wasn't really that hard for me but it really helped me to better understand genetic mutations and why mutations occur. Mutations/Crossing Over occur so our populations can have diversity and thrive in the environment they are in and they can adapt to the constantly changing environments.

  2. This is a good blog filled with a lot of useful information. Information wise you touched on almost everything so there is nothing I could add. Your reflection is well made because you talk about what you think about the subject and then added how it effects everybody and the population.

  3. You gathered a lot of information and that's really good! I like that there's so much to read here. In response to your reflection, I like that you did something that expands your knowledge. Something I forget a lot is that crossing over IS a mutation. Thank you!

  5. Your post has a lot of great information and has really helped me on crossing over. In your reflection I would have liked to known if anything surprised you when learning about this topic? In your blog you could have talked more about the bad things of crossing over if any. Great blog!
